Uvluluatak! (oov la low tock) Greetings! I am still alive and well here in Kotzebue. Each morning as I wend my windy way to school I think about how glad I am to not be hot and driving. It is dark when I get up in the morning and usually gray on my way to school. Some days I take a detour to walk along the water instead of beeline down Third Avenue. Those are my best days. I go to bed while it is still light. I purposely stayed up late last night to see when it gets dark and it wasn't until almost eleven. This makes it difficult for the children to adjust to school hours because they want to sleep with the sun, staying up late and sleeping in. Hell - I want to sleep with then sun! I took this photo last night around 9:30 - 9:45 p.m. on my way home from a friend's house (Yes! I am making friends!). I took it partly because I liked the cloud so much, but also to show how light it was. The sun is behind me and I am facing northeast. The air here feels like a song. I don't know how else to explain it. It is clear and blue and dancing, filled with personality and spirit. Sometimes the fragrance is refreshing, for instance when it is of the sea or the tundra, and sometimes it is not, as when the dog poop has been laying around too long. Apparently picking up dog poop is one of those chores adults give their children in these parts. I received several descriptions of the activity in response to my "The worst ten minutes of my summer was..." writing prompt. I have also seen what the yard looks like when someone forgets to do it.

Read this together with Helen -- we're with them in Austin, where it's 100 degrees! I couldn't bear to go to sleep while it's light out, but then, you're the opposite of Leo. Try a sleep mask. 9/3/2012 09:33:54 am
I've been wondering and waiting! Love your description of the Kotzebue air. What else? How is the teaching? Anything you're missing?? 9/3/2012 11:20:14 am
Yes, the description of the air tells me that you are well...living the song. If you have a 'land' mail box, please forward...I know you always like to touch paper and words. Be well, you sound wonderful!

For some reason getting poop stories sounds very nice to me.

Liatris.....I love that photograph of you by the water, it looks like the singing air has filled you up like a dancer, Deer Dancer. Your descriptions of your experiences are so tasty and flavorful. (well, I skipped the taste sensation of the dog poop) I am glad that you chose to blog and sent me the link, thank you. It is dry and hot here in Salem, I think, this year, we will welcome the return of rain.
